Paf Doubles Down on Ferry Gaming with Bell Casino Acquisition
Paf has sealed the acquisition of Bell Casino, bringing the Finnish operator’s onboard gaming footprint to 80 ships across European waters. The deal closed on 1 June, and it represents a significant consolidation play in what’s a niche but genuinely lucrative ferry casino market.
A Geographic and Commercial Fit
Bell operates casinos across 50 vessels sailing between major European hubs including Sweden, Germany, Poland, the Baltic countries, the UK, Ireland and the Netherlands. Paf already runs gaming operations on 26 ships, mostly in the Baltic and North Sea regions. Combined, the operation now spans 1,500 gaming machines and 450 arcade games.
For Paf, the acquisition fills a geographic gap. The ferry market is fragmented and profitable, catering to travellers with time to burn and a captive audience. Bell’s routes and established operations hand Paf immediate scale in regions where the Finnish company had barely a foothold.
Bell Keeps Its Independence
Here’s what’s notable: Bell remains largely intact. The company keeps its brand, business model, and management team. Founder Morgan Eliasson moves into a senior advisor role, while his son Marcus continues as CEO. The operation still employs 28 people.
That’s smart thinking from Paf. Bell is a family business with deep roots and relationships baked into its routes. Tear that apart and you risk damaging what makes the thing valuable. Instead, Paf gets the assets and the institutional knowledge without the operational disruption.
Strategic Confidence
Paf CEO Christer Fahlstedt framed this as crucial for the company’s long-term strategy. Lasse Danielsson, COO of Paf’s Land & Ship division, emphasised the combined entity now has the foundation to invest and grow sustainably.
Morgan Eliasson’s parting words matter too. He called Paf a company with “long-term perspective and both feet firmly on the ground.” In an industry sometimes criticised for short-term thinking, that kind of endorsement signals a deal done right. The previous owner clearly believes his life’s work is in safe hands.
For players, the integration will likely bring operational benefits over time: coordinated loyalty schemes, consistent standards, investment in newer gaming machines. For Paf, it’s straightforward. More venues, more machines, more revenue, and stronger negotiating power with ferry operators right across Europe.
