Betting markets have opened speculative odds on the UK breaching the 40C temperature threshold before 1 July, with the Met Office’s most severe red extreme heat warning now in force across parts of England and Wales until tomorrow evening.

Record-Breaking Heat on the Cards

Weather specialists are pricing a 6/4 shot on the UK hitting 40C before the month’s end, reflecting forecasts that have tightened significantly over the past three days. The odds reflect genuine meteorological possibility, though frankly it remains touch and go whether any individual recording station will actually cross that threshold.

Only once in recorded UK history has the temperature hit 40C or above. That was July 2022, when Coningsby in Lincolnshire recorded 40.3C, setting both the all-time UK record and the July monthly record. Southern England is currently forecast to reach around 37C today, with “feels like” temperatures running considerably higher as the heatwave peaks.

The 0.3 Degree Question

Breaking the existing July monthly record is priced at 2/1 with a 33.3% implied probability. That small 0.3C gap might not sound like much. In meteorological terms, though, it’s genuinely significant. Weather station recordings during extreme heat events can vary by half a degree based on local conditions alone. When the 2022 record came in, only a single station recorded above 40C while most others topped out in the high 30s.

Multiple weather modelling agencies have flagged the potential for individual stations to record 39C and above through tomorrow. The real question is whether the conditions align perfectly enough for any one location to punch through that psychological 40C barrier.
