Wildz becomes first operator to secure Finnish gambling licence ahead of 2027 market launch

Wildz Group has announced approval for a Finnish gambling licence, positioning itself as the first operator to secure authorisation ahead of the Nordic country's eagerly anticipated market opening on 1 July 2027. The five-year licence, granted by the Finnish National Police Board, will enable the Malta-based group to operate across the new regulated framework when it launches.
Building a Nordic Presence
The company runs a diverse portfolio under the Wildz umbrella, including its flagship brand alongside Blingi, Caxino, Chipz, Spinz, Tuplaus and Wheelz, plus the Wildz Sports sportsbook. Sam Brown, the group's chief executive, framed the approval as validation of Wildz's commitment to delivering safe and engaging products to Finnish players when the regulated market goes live.
Thing is, the Finnish National Police Board hasn't publicly confirmed the approval yet, so Wildz's announcement is currently the only basis for claiming first-mover status in the licensing queue. That said, the company's track record across multiple European markets suggests serious intent.
A Major Market Transition
Finland's shift from state-controlled gambling to a licensing system represents a significant regulatory evolution. The transition opens specified online gambling activities to competition while preserving Veikkaus' position in certain product categories. This measured approach differs from full market liberalisation, creating a hybrid model that appeals to both incumbents and new entrants.
Interest has been brisk. Around 75 to 80 companies have submitted applications since the process began, each carrying a €29,000 fee. Major operators including LeoVegas and Betsson have signalled their interest, and the Finnish regulator continues to process submissions.
A Wider Nordic Pattern
Finland's licensing framework places it alongside other Nordic jurisdictions rethinking online gambling regulation. Denmark's established licensed market provides useful comparison data for operators assessing commercial viability. The region is becoming a focal point for European iGaming expansion. As more approvals come through ahead of July 2027, the competitive landscape will become clearer for both established operators and newcomers eyeing Nordic growth.
